newport, maine``

[ ]newport estates inn.
Once a beautiful and prestigious estate, the Newport Estates Inn has been remodeled into a decadently vintage four star hotel. The welcoming three story structure is a perfect home away from home and a must-see landmark for tourists.

00
[ ]the pier.
Built on the waterfront of quaint little Newport, the Pier is a charming sit-in restaurant overlooking the harbor. Watch the sailboats drift by and seagulls graze while you enjoy five-star American cuisine.

00
[ ]newport-augusta railway station.
This is the single stop for trains running between big-city Augusta, Maine's capital, and little Newport. It's got that old-age feel to the architecture, but has been renovated diligently to keep up with the demands of modern transportation.

00
[ ]newport state forest.
Complete with scenic photo ops and almost fifty miles of dirt trails, the hilly Newport State Forest is one of the richest squares of land in the state. Be sure to catch it in early fall-- the pale Birch trees are breathtaking in autumnal yellow.

Camping opens Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day.

00
[ ]the old warehouse.
the town of Newport was built around this building, once an important element of the shipping and delivery processes for many corporations. The square and forbidding concrete behemoth of a structure was closed in 1980 due to construction and foundation flaws and has remained condemned ever since.

00
[ ]happy wheels skating rink.
Associated with colored lights, dance pop music and 4th grade birthday parties, Happy Wheels is just the same grimy, stingy roller rink it has been since 1979.

Beware of little kids trying to skate backwards.

00
[ ]newport public swimming pool.
If the ocean is just too big and fishy for your taste, feel free to take a dip in the public pool. Swimmers are always under the careful eye of a lifeguard so remember: no running! No diving!

00
[ ]newport recreational park.
On the edge of town you'll find the sports park, complete with a baseball diamond, football field, running track and a sprawling soccer field and bleachers for spectators by each. In between are shade trees, benches and paved walkways, making the park one of Newport's shining gems.

00
[ ]the strike zone.
Once an old apartment building, the Strike Zone is Newport's smoky, neon-lit bowling alley du jour, complete with a cheap bar and greasy concessions.

Tournament Nights occur every Friday.

00
[ ]newport memorial hospital.
True to the mold of small-town hospitals, Newport Memorial is equipped to handle only check ups to minor surgeries. The staff is friendly and compassionate and there is a helicopter on standby to deliver seriously injured emergency victims to their sister hospital in Augusta.

00
[ ]newport sugar shop.
one of maine's best candy and ice cream stores, people flock to newport on the weekends and during summer just to taste their good ole' chocolate pie.

00

the outskirts``

[ ]the beanery cafe.
This stylish establishment was one of the first (and most notable) businesses of its kind in Maine. Dimly lit and pleasant smelling, the Beanery offers a large variety of tasty coffees, pastries and chocolates at even tastier prices.

00
[ ]newport harbour beach.
Yellow beaches, rolling dark waves and craggy rock formations make up the face of the beach. This is the place to catch a wave or get a tan with your friends.

Be warned that that there's only a lifeguard on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day!

in always where I need to...
[ ]the strip mall.
This strip of stores is the closest thing Newport has to a mall. Its a decent little shopping scene, home to some big name stores like Abercrombie and Buckle. Scattered in with restaurants and little specialty boutiques, this is the place to go for shopping or outings.

00
[ ]the boardwalk.
Overlooking the beach, this fun structure extends far into the sea to view the boats and the beautiful vastness of the Atlantic. Smelling of corn dogs and cotton candy and complete with a ferris wheel, a surf shop and many migrant curio vendors, the boardwalk is a great place to burn a sunny afternoon.

00
[ ]the pink flamingo.
The hottest place to open in Newport in a long time, the Pink Flamingo is a dance and nightclub that is a beacon of bright lights and a nighttime pulse on the weekend. Its the face of Newport's growing night life and churns out rhythm from dark until dawn.

00
[ ]augusta county zoo
The zoo sits about twenty minutes away from Newport, along the freeway that takes you to Augusta. There are many great adventures to be had here, from the big cat house to the aviary and a medley of stage shows featuring the zoo's exotic animals and talented handlers. The zoo isn't incredibly large or wealthy, but the small group of animals featured is great fun for the whole family.

00
[ ]rocking horse farm
Rocking Horse Farm is on the outskirts of Newport. Being a small 20 acres, it has every animal. Even programs and petting zoos. They even give lessons for horseback riders. Did I mention there's camels and donkeys?
